San Francisco Bay

The rum-war waters

The Bay is where tiki turned into an arms race. Vic Bergeron opened Hinky Dinks at San Pablo and 65th in Oakland in 1934; Skipper Kent answered with Zombie Village directly across the street in 1942 — the most consequential intersection in cocktail history, and the corner where the Mai Tai was born. Trad'r Sam has poured continuously since 1937, the Tonga Room since 1945, and the modern era answers with Smuggler's Cove and Forbidden Island.
