Arrival Night Crawl

Land, drop bags, and hit the living rooms of San Diego tiki before the event swallows your week. End near the Catamaran so Wednesday flows into the luau.

The Harbor Islands Pilgrimage

The densest tiki geography in the city — two man-made islands in the bay, seventy years of Polynesian pop. Start at Harbor Island, where Don the Beachcomber's seventh house held its ground for three years under the airport approach, then cross to Shelter Island. Sunset mai tai at Bali Hai is mandatory.

Know Before You Go

First-timer intel
Free vs. ticketed
The Tiki Marketplace and art show are open to the public — seminars, pool areas, and evening entertainment require a paid pass. If you're local and curious, the marketplace alone is worth the trip.
The seminars fill up
40+ seminars on tiki history, mixology, and mid-century design. The good ones hit capacity — check the schedule when it drops and plan your day around your must-sees.
Budget for the room, not just the ticket
Parking runs $18/night plus a daily resort amenity fee. The 3-night minimum at the host hotel is the real cost of admission — but staying on-property is the whole point once the pool DJs start.
Wednesday is not optional
The opening luau at the Catamaran — a genuinely Polynesian-styled 1950s resort on Mission Bay — is its own experience and the best low-key night to actually talk to people.
Dress the part
This is the best-dressed crowd in tiki. Aloha wear is the floor, not the ceiling — and yes, there's a caftan meetup.

Survival Guide

Provisions & resupply
Liquor
Valley Liquor — On Hotel Circle itself, minutes from the Town and Country. Beer, spirits, mixers, snacks — and Crust Pizzeria is attached to it. (The old Valley Liquor at 875 Hotel Circle S is permanently closed; 1201 is the live one.)

Ice
Valley Liquor — Bags at the counter — grab them with the bottles. For room-party quantities, the Vons at Mission Valley is a five-minute drive.

Late-Night Food
Denny's — Mission Valley — The classic 3am option just off Hotel Circle. It is exactly what you think it is, and at that hour that's a feature. Mind the one dark hour: closed 3–4 a.m.

Late-Night Food
Rudford's Restaurant — San Diego's all-night diner since 1949, about ten minutes down the 8. When the room parties wind down and you need a counter seat and a chicken-fried steak, this is the move.
