Room lockdown intel: The Beachcomber is small and oceanfront, and Hukilau runs it like a takeover — you must buy your event pass online first, then call the resort directly to book; rooms started around $255/night plus fees in 2026 and the block evaporates fast. This is a two-campus event: daytime symposiums, vendors, and pool programming happen oceanside at the Beachcomber in Pompano Beach, while the marquee nights move seven miles south to the Mai-Kai — budget rideshare time (20–30 min each way) and do not plan to drive yourself home from the Molokai bar.

First Night Soundings

Ease in before the weekender proper: a sunset spin at Pier Top (66 minutes per revolution, pour accordingly), portholes and mermaids at the Wreck Bar, then a nightcap in the sand at Bamboo Beach on your way back up A1A to the Beachcomber.

The Pilgrim's Course

Pay respects at the Kreepy Tiki site on South Federal, then run north to the main event: a Mai-Kai wander through the gardens, happy hour in the Molokai bar, and a golden-hour rum runner at Bamboo Beach before rolling home to Pompano.

The Dead Reckoning Run

South from Hallandale through the ruins of the Polynesian golden age — the South Pacific's thatched A-frames, built to take on the Mai-Kai; the Luau's moai on the 79th Street Causeway; Monte Proser's Beachcomber, where the Zombie wintered in the 1940s — ending with a living toast among 500 rums at the Kaona Room.

The One That Lost

Two Polynesian compounds opened twelve miles apart on the same highway. Only one is still pouring. Take them in order — the gardens that are gone first, then the room that outlasted them — and the comparison does the work no plaque could.

Know Before You Go

First-timer intel
Pass first, room second
You cannot book the Beachcomber room block without an event pass — buy the pass at hukilauevent.com, then call the resort directly. Rooms ran ~$255/night + fees in 2026 and sell out; passes tier up in price as the event nears.
It's a two-campus event
Daytime (symposiums, marketplace, pool bars) is at the Beachcomber in Pompano Beach; marquee nights are at the Mai-Kai, ~7 miles south. Budget 20–30 minutes each way and use rideshare — the Molokai bar and driving do not mix.
Book Mai-Kai nights early
Post-restoration, the Mai-Kai's dinner shows and Hukilau main-event nights sell out well ahead. Reserve the Polynesian revue and any history tours the day tickets open, not the week of.
The guest bars are the main course
Twenty guest bars and bartenders pour sample cocktails all weekend, plus after-hours room parties. Pace yourself, carry water, and eat real food — this is a marathon measured in half-pours.
June in South Florida is a mood
Expect 90°F, heavy humidity, and a near-daily afternoon thunderstorm — hurricane season officially starts June 1. Pack aloha wear that breathes, reef-safe sunscreen, and a dry bag for the pool-deck sets.

Survival Guide

Provisions & resupply
Liquor
Big Daddy's Liquors — Closest full package store to the Beachcomber (~1.5 mi, just over the Intracoastal bridge). Rum selection adequate for room-party duty.

Ice
Publix (Pompano Shopping Center) — Bagged ice, limes, juices, and cocktail-napkin diplomacy — directly across from Big Daddy's, so one bridge crossing provisions the whole night.
