The Midwest's comeback story. Kansas City's tiki scene looked finished when TikiCat — briefly rated the best tiki bar in the world — closed in 2020. It didn't stay down: the Kon Tiki Room opened in the Crossroads in 2024 and Tiki Huna anchors the North KC Iron District, and the Lei Away strings them together into a proper weekend with seminars, live music, a bazaar, and the Rum Rumble bartender battle. This chart plots the living scene and the deep bench of KC Polynesian ghosts — the town poured more Mai Tais in the mid-century than its reputation suggests.

Crossroads to the Iron District

Kansas City's tiki revival in two stops. Start in the Crossroads at the Kon Tiki Room — the 2024-vintage full-service flagship in a converted flower shop — then rideshare north of the river to Tiki Huna's open-air rum den in the Iron District container park, where the Lei Away's Rum Rumble goes down.

The Dead Reckoning Run

KC's Polynesian golden age was deeper than anyone remembers. Trader Vic's held the Crown Center for 23 years; TikiCat was briefly the best bar in the world; the Castaways scattered sand on the floor for a pre-Byrds Gene Clark; and the Kona Kai brought an Oceanic Arts palace to the Plaza. Four graves, one afternoon.

Know Before You Go

First-timer intel
It's a crawl, not a hotel
The Lei Away is distributed across Crossroads and North KC venues — there's no single host hotel. Plan lodging near the Crossroads for walkability, and budget rideshares to reach Tiki Huna across the river.
The scene is younger than the ghosts
Both operating bars on this chart opened in the 2020s (Kon Tiki Room 2024, Tiki Huna ~2020). Hours can be seasonal and evening-only — check before you go, especially at Tiki Huna's open-air container-park space.
September is fair game
Kansas City in mid-September is warm days, cool evenings — comfortable crawl weather. No weather drama to plan around.
The bazaar has a daytime, family window
The Lei'd Back Bazaar runs family-friendly daytime hours before the 21+ night programming — worth knowing if you're traveling with anyone under drinking age.
